Project Overview
In order to extend an existing 5,200′ to an 8,000′ runway for Ft. Lauderdale’s Hollywood International Airport a creative solution was needed to avoid existing infrastructure. The runway is tipped at a 1.3% slope from the midpoint to the end, in order to clear an existing railroad track. At the end of the runway planes will be 60′ above grade. In order to accomplish this, the design build team of Tutor Perini and Baker Concrete were hired to construct two huge bridges over existing Florida East Coast (FEC) railway, US – 1 and several additional roads. The larger bridge will be part of the new Runway. The second bridge will be a portion of the new Taxiway. Baker was part of the Tutor Perini Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood Venture team. This project was completed by our Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Florida, team.
