Project Overview
Baker Concrete operated as general contractor for the shell portion of the Miami Airport baggage handling system (MIA BHS) building. Baker Concrete solicited and executed subcontracts for auger cast piling, waterproofing, fireproofing, masonry, precast structural/ and structural steel. The MIA BHS team not only managed the sub-contractor but also managed and self-performed excavation/backfill, lime rock base, dewatering, reinforcing and all sub/superstructure concrete. This project was completed by our Fort Lauderdale, Florida, team.

The job site was situated between two active terminals at H3 and G2. This area received heavy airline traffic throughout the day and evening. The MIA BHS team had to plan and initiate a logistics plan to properly maintain production while meeting an aggressive and accelerated schedule.
This facility was fully designed at the time of contract but, due to changing technology, the owner requested numerous design changes. Baker was tasked with implementing design changes with extremely short time frames and with no impact to critical path schedule. Baker also led the efforts to provide extensive BIM modeling to facility coordination of all trades. All activities at the job site were under strict security guidelines of Homeland Security and Miami/Dade. This posed significant challenges during all phases of the construction process.
