Gulf Coast Form Builder Carpenter Apprentice FAQs
What are the eligibility requirements?
To be eligible for the program, you must have been a Baker co-worker for at least 90 days and be a minimum of 18 years of age. Additionally, participants should be available to attend classes outside regular work hours.
How long is the school year?
One semester is 5 months.
When are classes?
Classes are scheduled once a week in the evening. Each session lasts about three hours. Day and time may vary and are subject to change.
What if I must miss a class to be at work?
Supervisors are aware that an apprentice must be in class and will allow the apprentice to miss work.
How are my hours tracked for On-the-Job learning?
The Apprentice will track his or her hours using the OJL Construction Craft Laborer sheet provided by the instructor. The apprentice will then provide the sheet to their supervisor for approval and signature. The supervisor will take a picture of the sheet and submit it to the instructor. Finally, the apprentice will use the Form Builder Carpenter OJL Hours online form and submit their hours.
Do I get a certificate of graduation?
Yes, each apprentice will receive a certificate from the Department of Labor upon completion of the apprenticeship program, and also a certificate from Baker.
Will there be a graduation?
Yes, at Baker, we love to celebrate the achievements of our co-workers and will hold a ceremony for apprenticeship graduates.
Will I get paid to study?
Yes, apprentice pay rates will depend on current construction experience. Apprentice wages will be re-evaluated every 650 hours of training and a wage increase will be based on competency.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is not a qualification in itself. It is several separately certified qualifications and courses, known as a Framework. Apprenticeships combine practical and critical thinking skills. They are designed to help employees gain a high level of jobsite competency, skills and performance.
