Concrete Solutions for a Carbon-Neutral Future
As the most highly used material in construction, concrete is a key component in the race to reduce carbon emissions. Baker Concrete Construction, the nation’s largest concrete contractor, is working to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint on multiple fronts.
In terms of internal operations, Baker is targeting resource conservation, waste reduction, sustainably sourced materials, and other measures to support environmentally sound practices. On a larger scale, the company is partnering with industry groups, suppliers, and clients to develop economical solutions for reducing embodied carbon at scale. Baker is a member of the American Concrete Institute’s Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete (NEU), which is focused on driving education, awareness, and adoption of carbon neutral concrete materials and technologies.
These partnerships are already seeing results. Recently, Baker worked with Holcim US to implement a specialized ECOPact® low-carbon concrete mix for construction of a data center project. The mix will reduce the total CO2 in the concrete by 39%, enabling the owner to exceed its own design standards for embodied carbon. Efforts like these earned Baker recognition as a leader in sustainability by the White House in October 2022.
