Project Overview
The Akron Children’s Hospital project included a new critical care tower with 69 bed neonatal ICU, high risk OB, new emergency department, and an outpatient surgery center. The building includes 63,000 sf of slab on grade and 337,000 sf of 15” flat plate concrete structural frame. The frame included 1,050 tons of reinforcing steel and 24,000 cy of concrete. Welty/Boldt (a joint venture between Welty Building Company and The Boldt Company) were the construction managers for the project. The project was constructed using the IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) contract method.
The significant achievements include, the initial project schedule was 54 weeks for the concrete frame and foundations. Despite a record cold winter, the schedule was completed in 43 weeks. The project utilized high-strength rebar and high-strength foundations to provide value engineering ideas to save the owner money and time. Extensive Value-Based Decision Making using CBA and other Lean-based decision tools allowed the owner to see substantial savings.
The Akron Children’s Hospital represents a significant improvement to the lives and health of children all around the greaterAkron area. Baker Concrete is proud to have been a part of such a great project.
