Project Overview

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions constructed a Waste Solidification Building in Aiken, South Carolina. The facility houses equipment for processing both low- and high-activity liquid waste, along with an analytical laboratory, control room, and additional support facilities. The building is designed to provide radiation shielding for workers, contain airborne contamination, and protect against potential natural hazards.

Baker was contracted to perform 16 divisions of work on this lump-sum project. This included constructing a monolithic foundation mat, perimeter and interior concrete walls, and structural steel framing. We also completed rough and finish carpentry and caulking, along with roofing and sheet metal, doors and windows, and fireproofing. We mobilized overhead cranes, specialty equipment, laboratory equipment, and glove boxes. We also supported work on mechanical piping and HVAC systems, temperature controls, instrumentation, and electrical power distribution, fixtures, and trim.

The project was completed to the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Quality Assurance Level One standards.
