Project Overview

Carpenter Technology develops, manufactures, and distributes cast/wrought and powder metal stainless steels and specialty alloys. It built a new facility to produce and refine steel for the aerospace industry. The new complex is situated on 230 acres with room to expand over the next 50 years.

Baker’s scope for the Carpenter Forge Foundation included cast-in-place foundations for the world’s largest radial press forge machine. The project involved excavation, dewatering, rock blasting, and shoring. The bottom of the foundation is 40 feet below grade.

The foundation included a monolithic base mat totaling 3,132 CY. A multitude of equipment pads were placed on top of the base mat, ranging in size, shape, and thickness. We poured 4’, 4-foot-thick perimeter walls, and a 1,600 CY structural deck varying in thickness from three to five feet, with structural beam block outs and openings throughout. Baker’s scope of work also included rebar, conduit, and installation of over 1,750 embedded steel items. We installed over 75,800,000 pounds of permanent-weight items.
