Project Overview
City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri, contracted Baker to expand its Southwest Power Generating Station to help it meet increasing power demand.
Baker’s $21 million contract involved building all major concrete foundations for a new 350 MW unit, a steam turbine generator pedestal, a new cooling tower basin, underground process piping, and additional work packages. A 500-foot coal reclaim tunnel was constructed 30 feet below grade. The tunnel work required detailed coordination and weekly coal deliveries to accommodate operations at the existing power station.
Baker used maturity meters and adhered to strict temperature control during concrete curing and placement to meet equipment foundation requirements. Baker completed its portion of the project in 15 months, allowing contractors for the boiler and turbine installations to begin their work on schedule.
